Mike Vlok
Ink on Paper

VLok Work in the Hotel and restaurant industry for most of the 70’s, 80s and 90s. Most of the first 11 years he worked for Holiday Inns and end up as General Manager at the Maseru Holiday Inn in Lesotho, and moved on from there in a partnership as owner manager of 5 Mike’s Kitchens in Johannesburg before moving down to Knysna in 1997. Once in Knysna , Mike bought an existing coffee/gift/cottage furniture shop which he ran for 5 years. During this time he used to sell art and ceramics for local artist and this started his own passion for ceramics, so under the tutelage of Lesley-Ann Hoets, Mike started a successful interlude with hand built raku fired ceramics. He had many exhibitions as a solo artist, mostly in and around the Garden Route and Southern Cape, also taking part in many multi-media and ceramic exhibits in the area.

With the arrival of the new millennium and all the residential development happening along the Garden Route area , Mike turned his creative mind to landscape design and layouts. . . . so… whilst continuing with his ceramic passion, he started rolling out numerous new gardens mostly in Knysna and he continues to do so till this day. Sadly Mike lost his home and pottery studio to the 2017 fire which swept through Knysna, and has not made any new ceramics since then, but is happily settled in his new home.

With the arrival of Covid 19 and the lockdown which began at the end of March, Mike was challenged by a friend living in the U S A to do a daily sketch or doodle and post it on a doodle group which she had set up on Whatsapp…..so five of them , two from S A, one from the U K and two in the States started this daily therapy with whatever pens, paints and paper were available in their homes, and these are some the results of Mike’s pattern sketches….very similar to those he used on his ceramics. All done with Artline permanent marker, black biro, pencil and water colour pencils.
